The Tranquilo Traveler

The Tranquilo Traveler is a celebration of voluntourism, slow travel, and other interesting ways to see the world. Travel writer and award- winning Moon Handbooks author Joshua Berman created The Tranquilo Travel as a resource for world trippers and international volunteers, a window to the author’s travels in Nicaragua, Belize, and beyond, and an update of his books and articles.

My co-author, Chicki Mallan, and I just took third place in the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) 21st Annual Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition for best guidebook.

I assumed the job of researching and writing Moon Handbooks Belize on this latest edition and would like to both congratulate Chicki and thank her for all her work on the first five editions. There are also a whole slew of folks at Avalon Travel Publishing who helped make this happen. Gracias.

Here’s what the judges said: “The conversational writing takes this guidebook beyond just a comprehensive, detailed listing of what to do and where to go. The authors blend history, environment and ‘need to know’ information in an entertaining way. The guide handles all budgets. The itineraries and sectional maps at the beginning introduce the country and allow readers to get a quick overview before diving into the details.”

Congratulations! I’ve been enjoying your travelogue and it’s no surprise to me that your writing style was recognized. It’s a joy reading your stuff, only wish there was more of it. (and the photos are wonderful too!)

That’s fantastic, Josh! It was a treat to work on the book and I’m glad it’s being recognized in the field.
